Historical Milestones
Steven Matz was born in Stony Brook, New York which made his debut pitching for the Mets a homecoming of sorts. On June 28th, 2015 Matz had one of the most iconic major league debuts in baseball history as he not only got the win with the way he pitched on the mound, but also for a great day at the plate. Steven set an MLB record for driving in four runs in his debut, the most ever by a pitcher. He also broke the Mets franchise record for most RBIs in a debut but for any player.
Matz was a part of the Mets vaunted rotation of aces in 2015 that went all the way to the World Series. Due to injuries, he would only start six games that season, but he was outstanding when he did pitch. Matz had an ERA of 2.27, a record of 4-0 and he struck out 35 batters in 35 2/3 innings. He showed so much in those six starts that he was given the fourth spot in the post-season rotation over veterans like Bartolo Colon.
While he has dealt with injuries early on in his career, Steven Matz has a very promising future as a starting pitcher for the New York Mets. He is a still a young hard-throwing starter for the Mets, but where he differentiates himself from his fellow starters in the Mets rotation is that Matz is a lefty.
