Historical Milestones
Hall of Famer Joe Morgan is widely considered to be one of the best second baseman in the history of baseball. Morgan is best known for playing for the Cincinnati Reds as a member of the “Big Red Machine” lineup but he also played in the big leagues for the Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Oakland Athletics. While playing in the majors for twenty-two seasons he had 268 home runs, 1,133 RBIs, and 2,517 hits. His #8 jersey has even been retired by the Reds, ensuring that no other player will ever wear that number for the franchise.
In 1975 and 1976 Morgan’s career reached a high point. Not only did he win the National League MVP Award in both seasons, but the Reds also won back-to-back World Series titles over the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees respectively. During his MLB career he was a ten-time All-Star, even receiving the All-Star Game MVP Award in 1972. In addition to those accolades he also won a Silver Slugger Award and five Gold Glove Awards.
