Historical Milestones
Gale Sayers is widely regarded as one of the most talented running backs in the history of the NFL despite only really having a five-year career due to injuries. Prior to his time in the NFL, Sayers had a standout career as a Kansas Jayhawk rushing for 2,675 yards and gaining a Big Eight Conference record for all-purpose yards with 4,020. He was a consensus All-American in 1963 and 1964 and was first-team All-Big Eight for three seasons. He entered the NFL and AFL drafts as one of the best players available and was selected with the fourth overall pick by the Bears in the NFL Draft and with the fifth overall pick by the Kansas City Chiefs. Sayers chose to play for George Halas on the Chicago Bears.
Sayers burst onto the scene in his rookie season and scored an NFL record 22 touchdowns with six of them coming receiving, 14 coming on ground rushing and one each in kick and punt returns. In one game in his rookie season against the San Francisco 49ers, Sayers tied an NFL record for scoring six touchdowns in a single game. Following his first season, Sayers was named as the 1965 Rookie of the Year. The next year he would lead the league in rushing with 1,231 yards and was named a First-Team All-Pro for the second straight year. He would go on to be a First-Team All-Pro the next three years as well despite the injuries beginning to surface as he only played nine games in 1968. Sayers would bounce back in 1969 winning the Comeback Player of the Year award after leading the league in rushing again with 1,032 yards. After that season, Sayers would only play four more games as his knees broke down and he cannot continue his career.
Although Sayers really only had a five-year career in the NFL, he was still inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and had his No. 40 jersey retired by the Chicago Bears. Fans who got the chance to see Sayers play can appreciate the immense talent that he had and now they can get rare autographed collectibles from his career. These signed memorabilia are certified authentic and will only increase in value over time.
