Edwin Encarnacion is a designated hitter and first baseman who currently plays for the Cleveland Indians. Encarnacion was born in the Dominican Republic and coached baseball in Puerto Rico, which made him eligible for the MLB Draft. In the ninth round of the 2000 MLB Draft, the Texas Rangers drafted Edwin but traded him to the Cincinnati Reds in 2001. Since his debut in 2005, Encarnacion has been a vital part of every team he’s played with.
Encarnacion played his first four years in the majors with the Cincinnati Reds, but he didn’t become the hitter we know him as until he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. With the Blue Jays, Encarnacion would get selected to All-Star games in 2013, 2014, and 2016, along with leading the American League in RBIs in 2016. In 2012, Encarnacion hit a grand slam against the Seattle Mariners and held his arm out in his iconic home run trot in which he acts like he’s carrying a parrot around the bases with him. After his great run with the Blue Jays, Encarnacion signed a three-year $60 million deal with the Cleveland Indians and on Opening Day, Encarnacion hit a walk-off grand slam which erased any doubts about his new contract.
