Historical Milestones
Trevor Hoffman can say without a doubt that he was one of the best closers in MLB history and memorabilia celebrating his career would find a place of honor in anyone’s collection. He made his debut with the Miami Marlins in 1993 and closed out his career with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2010, but Hoffman is best known for his time with the San Diego Padres. The seven-time All-Star tallied a then-record 601 saves to go along with an astounding 2.87 career ERA. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2018.
Trevor Hoffman’s lights-out pitching earned him recognition no other closer can claim. Twice, he was a runner-up in NL Cy Young voting, he came in the top six two other times as well as finishing in the top ten twice in the NL MVP race. Trevor Hoffman led the NL in saves in 1998 with a career-high 53 and again led the league in 2006. In a 15-year stretch, he had 30 or more saves in 14 of those years. He not only won the NL Reliever of the Year Award three times but after he retired they renamed the award the “Trevor Hoffman Award”.
Trevor Hoffman’s ability to consistently shut the door on opponents helped the San Diego Padres to four postseasons including a World Series berth in 1998. Between 1997 and 1998, he set a team then-record with 41 consecutive saves and still holds the MLB record for most games pitched for one team with 803. Trevor Hoffman finished his career with 902 appearances, 100 more than the previous record. For being the all-time team leader in saves, games, and ERA, Hoffman was elected to the Padres Hall of Fame and had his number 51 retired.
