Former Cincinnati Reds first baseman Tony Perez is one of the most decorated players in Major League Baseball’s history. In addition to playing with the Reds, he also played for the Boston Red Sox, Montreal Expos, and the Philadelphia Phillies. Throughout his big league career, he compiled highly impressive statistics including 379 home runs, 1,652 RBIs, and 2,732 hits over the course of his twenty-three seasons in the majors. While playing for the Reds he won three World Series, two as a player in 1975 and 1976, and a third as a coach in 1990.
Perez was a member of the Reds’ feared lineup known as the “Big Red Machine”. During his career he was named an All-Star seven times, even being selected the MVP of the All-Star Game in 1967. He was also the National League Player of the Week twice and won the Lou Gehrig Award in 1980. This icon finished the 1970 season with highest Offensive WAR in the NL slugging 40 home runs, driving in 129 baserunners, and posting a .317 batting average and .401 on-base percentage that season. In 2000 he was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame, ensuring his place among baseball’s greatest players forever.
