Historical Milestones
Pedro Martinez was one of the most intimidating and dominant pitchers in the MLB throughout his career. Martinez first came up as a pitcher with the Dodgers, primarily pitching out of the bullpen in 1993 before getting traded to the Montreal Expos. Martinez spent four seasons with the Expos, the last two being All-Star seasons, but his real breakout season came in the second of those All-Star years. In Martinez’ last season with the Expos in 1997 he led the league with a 1.90 ERA, had a career high 13 complete games, winning 17 games and the first of his three Cy Young Awards.
With Martinez approaching free agency, the Expos then traded him to the Boston Red Sox, who signed him to a six-year contract extension. In his seven seasons pitching in Boston, Martinez was a four-time All-Star, led the league in ERA four times, strikeouts three times and in wins once in 1999. That 1999 may have been the best in Pedro’s career as he won the AL Triple Crown with a record of 23-4, an ERA of 2.07 and a career-high 313 strikeouts. Martinez was a part of the historic 2004 Boston Red Sox team that broke the “Curse of the Bambino” by battling back from down 0-3 in the ALCS against the Yankees to win the series and go on to sweep the Cardinals for their first World Series victory in 86 years.
Martinez was once again a free agent after winning the World Series and he signed a four-year contract with the New York Mets. Martinez was an All-Star in each of the first two seasons with the Mets before regressing. Pedro Martinez was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2015 on his first time on the ballot and went in as a member of the Boston Red Sox.
