The Canadiens finished the regular season with a 40-33-7 record, good for second place in the Adams Division. It was during the playoffs where rookie Patrick Roy began to show the league what he was capable of. Roy would post a save rate of 92.3% and allow 1.92 goals per game, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy for postseason MVP. It was the first Stanley Cup for both Roy and Chelios, taking a very young and inexperienced Canadiens team to their first Stanley Cup in 6 years.
