Historical Milestones
The Utah Jazz are an NBA team that play in the Western Conference’s Northwest Division. Dating back to 1991, the Jazz plays their home games at the Vivint Smart Home Arena which is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Jazz came into the league as an expansion team in 1974 and originally were located in New Orleans. They played in New Orleans for a few seasons before moving to Utah, where they still play to this day.
The best era of Jazz basketball in simply referred to as the Stockton-Malone era, as point guard John Stockton and power forward Karl Malone formed one of the most famed duos in NBA history. With the massive center Mark Eaton anchoring the defense, Stockton orchestrating the offense, and Malone being one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, the Jazz were a powerhouse making the playoffs in each of Karl Malone’s 18 seasons with the team. Head coach Jerry Sloan took over the team during the 1988-89 season and was at the helm for a majority of this great run. That Jazz team will be remembered as one of the greatest teams to never win the NBA Finals. They got close in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons where they made two straight NBA Final after winning over 60 games in each of those regular seasons. The Jazz lost the Chicago Bulls in both of those Finals and have not made it back since. Malone and Stockton both left the team in 2003 but the Jazz have remained competitive in the years since.
Since there most infamous duo of Stockton and Malone, the Jazz have featured other successful duo starting with Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer, Paul Millsap and Richard Jefferson and now have a promising future with Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell leading the way. This current Jazz team beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2018 NBA Playoffs, in large part due to the play of Mitchell, but also with great performances from Joe Ingles, Derrick Favors, and Ricky Rubio.
