Historical Milestones
The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the most storied franchises in the NBA. Originally they were known as the Syracuse Nationals from 1946 until moving to Philadelphia becoming the 76ers in 1963. Throughout their existence, the franchise has won three NBA Championships as well as nine conference titles. This team competes in the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division and has had some of the most iconic players in league history play for the franchise.
In the early days of the franchise, the Syracuse Nationals won three conference championships during the 1950s. Their first NBA title came in 1955 when they defeated the Fort Wayne Pistons in seven games, being led by All-Stars Dolph Schayes and Bill Gabor. Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain joined the Sixers in 1964 and he led the organization to its second NBA title in 1967 when they defeated the San Francisco Warriors in six games. After nearly a decade of struggles the franchise acquired future Hall of Famers Julius Erving and George McGinnis in the late-1970s, this would kick-off one of the most successful runs in franchise history which would see them winning Eastern Conference titles in 1977, 1980, 1982, and 1983. Erving or “Dr. J” as he was nicknamed is regarded as one of the greatest basketball players in history and was a human highlight reel on the court. In 1982 another future Hall of Famer in Moses Malone joined the team and he and “Dr. J” led them to their latest NBA Championship in 1983 over the Los Angeles Lakers in a four-game sweep, Malone was named the MVP of the NBA Finals. At the 1984 NBA Draft, the 76ers drafted Charles Barkley with the fifth overall pick and he went on to play eight years of his NBA career with the team. During the 1990s they had difficulty finding success once again and a pivotal moment came at the 1996 NBA Draft when they selected Allen Iverson with the first overall pick. Iverson became one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history and led the organization to its latest Eastern Conference title in 2001 the same year that he won the MVP Award. Once again the franchise faced tough times but have managed to turn things around in recent years. With the selection of Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid in the NBA Draft, this team is ready to compete for a title once again. It will not be long before Head Coach Brett Brown has this group at the top of the conference again.
