So it came as no surprise that the former ABA players shined brightly that night. Led by his own head coach, Billy Cunningham, Julius Erving led a group of former ABA stars. He scored 11 points in 20 minutes with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Fellow ABA alum George Gervin scored 34 points with 10 rebounds and earned game MVP honors as the Eastern Conference captured a 144-136 win in overtime. The 1980 season ended with Dr. J posting the top scoring average (26.9) of his career. Thirteen years later, he was elected into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.
