Historical Milestones
The Chicago White Sox are an MLB team that plays in the American League Central division. One of two teams that play in Chicago, the White Sox play on the South Side of the city at Guaranteed Rate Field. The White Sox were one of the eight charter franchise in the American League, coming into the MLB in 1901. The White Sox won a pennant in their first season and have won American League pennants since. This first pennant came before the World Series began in 1903, so their first World Series appearance came in 1906. The White Sox would face off against their crosstown rival in the Chicago Cubs and beat them in six games for the first championship in franchise history. The White Sox would once again make the World Series in 1917 behind young stars like Eddie Cicotte and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, who won the series in six games against the New York Giants.
The great team that won the World Series in 1917, made it again in 1919 but eight players on the team were eventually banned from baseball in what has become known as “The Black Sox Scandal” when they threw the series due to heavy bets in opposition of them winning. That scandal set the White Sox franchise back greatly and they would not win a pennant again for forty years until 1959. The 1959 White Sox featured future Hall of Famer shortstop Luis Aparicio but ultimately lost the World Series. The White Sox would eventually make it back in 2005 and broke an 86-year championship drought as they beat the Houston Astros. The 2005 World Series Champion White Sox were managed by former White Sox player Ozzie Guillen and had a lineup that featured left fielder Scott Podsednik, first baseman Paul Konerko and catcher A.J. Pierzynski. The White Sox starting rotation that year featured four starters that eclipsed 14 wins with ace Mark Buehrle, Freddy Garcia, Jose Contreras and Jon Garland.
