Historical Milestones
Mike Richter was former goaltender in the NHL, that spent his entire career with the New York Rangers. After playing collegiately at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, before being selected by the Rangers with the 28th overall pick in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. Richter ended up making his debut with the Rangers in the 1999 NHL Playoffs. Richter would then become the backup goaltender for a few years before becoming the starter following the trade of veteran John Vanbiesbrouck, who he had been splitting time with.
In the 1994-95 season, Richter went 42-12 and the led the Rangers into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Richter would then lead the Rangers on a magical run that ended with them winning the Stanley Cup. Richter was a three-time All-Star in the NHL and also had plenty of success in international play. In the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, Richter won the gold medal for the U.S.A. and was named the MVP. He later won the silver medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics.
