Historical Milestones
Mathew Barzal is a name that hockey fans will remember for many years to come. This New York Islanders center has already made quite an impact on the NHL. The Islanders drafted him with the sixteenth overall pick of the 2015 NHL Draft. It will be exciting to see where this young superstar’s career takes him in the NHL. In rookie season, Barzal led all rookies in assists and points and established himself as one of the top playmakers in the NHL.
Before playing in the NHL Barzal played in the Western Hockey League for the Seattle Thunderbirds. In 2017 he led the Thunderbirds to a WHL Championship, the franchise’s first and was named the WHL Playoffs MVP. He has also represented Canada at numerous international competitions as well, even winning a Silver Medal with them at the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships. Since embarking on his NHL career he has been named one of the league’s Three Stars of the Week and was the Rookie of the Month for January 2018. Barzal finished his rookie season with 85 points, and led all rookies with 22 goals and 63 assists, which earned him the Calder Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the Year.
