Historical Mark McGwire Milestones
Mark McGwire was one of the most feared sluggers Major League Baseball has ever seen. McGwire hit a staggering 583 career home runs during his big league career. In 1984 McGwire was drafted with the tenth overall pick of the MLB Draft after playing his college baseball at the University of Southern California. This former Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals first baseman is a name that baseball fans will never forget.
During Mark McGwire’s rookie season in 1987 McGwire won the American League Rookie of the Year Award by blasting 49 home runs setting the rookie record, a record which stood until 2017. This twelve-time All-Star also won three Silver Slugger Awards and a Gold Glove Award while playing in the big leagues. Over the course of McGwire’s decorated career he led the league in home runs five times; and is best remembered for his legendary single season home run chases with Sammy Sosa during the 1998 and 1999 seasons. In 1998 Mark set the single season home run record, breaking Roger Maris’ record of 61 set in 1961. By doing so, he became the first player to ever hit 70 home runs in a single season and followed that up in 1999 with a 65 home run season.
