Historical Milestones
Keith Hernandez was a former first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets that is regarded as the greatest defensive first baseman of all-time. Starting in 1978, Hernandez won 11-straight Gold Gloves Awards in the National League playing for both the Cardinals and Mets during that span. His eleven Gold Gloves are the most by any first baseman in MLB history. Hernandez had a strong arm that led the Mets to run all rely on throw through him and his great range allowed him to play well off of first base helping the other infielder cover ground as well. Hernandez was so aggressive on fielding bunts that teams would not bunt against him because he was so prone to getting the force out at second base.
Hernandez began his career with the Cardinals and spent 10 seasons in St. Louis. In 1979, Hernandez became an All-Star for the first time in a season in which he hit a career-high .344 to lead the league in batting, while also setting career-highs in RBI (105), doubles (48) and runs scored (116). The Cardinals won the 1982 World Series with Hernandez driving eight RBI in the series as St. Louis beat the Brewers. The next year, primarily due to disagreements with manager Whitey Herzog, Hernandez was traded to the New York Mets, one of the worst teams in the National League at the time. Keith Hernandez became the leader and eventual captain of the New York Mets along with fellow veteran catcher Gary Carter, that helped groom young players such as Dwight Gooden, Daryl Strawberry, and Lenny Dykstra into one of the best teams in all of baseball in the late 1980s. The Mets won the NL East by over 20 games in 1986, winning 108 games and went on to win the World Series against the Boston Red Sox in seven games. In Game 7 of the World Series, with the Mets being shutout by Bruce Hurst into the sixth inning, Hernandez hit a clutch two-run single to put the Mets on the board. He got another RBI in his next at-bat as well giving him three in the series-clinching game. Now Hernandez remains with the Mets as a color analyst on the television broadcasts of their games.
