John Smoltz was one of the most dominant pitchers of his era. Smoltz pitched the majority of his big league career for the Atlanta Braves, both as a starting pitcher and as their closer for four seasons. During his incredible MLB career, he won 213 games, saved 154 games, struck out 3,084 batters, and posted an ERA of 3.33 for his career. He is also regarded among the great “big game” pitchers of all-time possessing a 15-4 postseason record and a 2.67 post-season ERA.
Throughout his major league career, Smoltz was highly decorated. He was an eight-time All-Star selection, won the 2002 National League Rolaids Relief Award, and a Silver Slugger Award in 1997. In 1996 he won the NL Cy Young Award posting a 2.94 ERA and a record of 24-8 that season. This Hall of Famer was an important part of the Braves’ 1990s success, receiving the 1992 NLCS MVP Award and helping lead them to a World Series title in 1995.
