Historical Milestones
Former American football defensive end and outside linebacker, Jason Taylor spent much of his career playing for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League. He has earned career highlights such as the NFL sacks leader and the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, as well as broken league records with fumble recoveries and sacks.
Jason Taylor grew up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and played on the University of Akron’s collegiate football team. At the University of Akron, Taylor was a four-year letterman and a three-year starter for the football team, as well as starter for the Akron Zips men’s basketball team and an inductee to Akron’s Ring of Honor; his statistics with the football team record 279 tackles, 21 sacks, 7 fumbles recovered, and 3 interceptions. His collegiate success earned him a two-team first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection, his last two years, earned him the National Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance of 12 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, 3 stops for loss, and as he tackled a punt returner in the end zone during a game in 1996. During the 1997 NFL Draft, Jason Taylor was drafted by the Miami Dolphins. Immediately, Taylor was recognized as one of the best defensive ends in the NFL. Taylor recorded five sacks and forced two fumbles during his rookie season, and the following season he recorded nine sacks. In 1999, he made the first of his eight league interceptions. In 2000, Taylor made the Pro Bowl and in 2002, he led the league and tied the Dolphin record for sacks with 18.5. Furthermore, he forced seven fumbles, knocked down eight more passes, and had 69 tackles, which led him to be a consensus All-Pro selection and Pro Bowl selection again. The year 2006 brought Jason Taylor one of the best seasons of his career, as he recorded 13.5 sacks, 9 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 2 interceptions. He was selected as the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and was named a consensus All-Pro for a second time. In 2007, he broke career and league records, as he achieved double-digits in sacks and now holds the NFL record, tied with former Falcons linebacker Jessie Tuggle, for five of his FRs being returned for touchdowns. He also became the all-time leader in defensive touchdowns scored by a defensive lineman with eight career defensive touchdowns. That same year, he was voted to the All-time Miami Dolphins team and was a First-team selection at defensive end. Taylor made brief appearances with the Washington Redskins and the New York Jets, before returning with the Dolphins. In 2011, he had the sixth-most sacks in league history with 139.5, more than Hall of Famers such as Richard Dent and John Randle. Upon retiring from the NFL at the end of his 2011 season, Taylor became the NFL’s all-time record holder with nine career defensive touchdowns by a defensive linemen. He has continued to make an influence on the NFL with his broadcasting career and analyst for NFL Live. In 2012, he was inducted into the Miami Dolphins Honor Roll and in 2017 he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility – the 10th Dolphin to enter Canton and the fifth Miami Dolphin to be elected in his first year of eligibility.
