Historical Milestones
Doug Williams was a former quarterback in the NFL that is most known for winning Super Bowl XXII as the starter for the Redskins. Williams attended Grambling State University and started all four years, to which he led them to a 36-7 record. While in school, Williams was named Black College Player of the Year twice and led the Grambling Tigers to three straight Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships. Despite the fact that Williams led the NCAA in many categories during his senior season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator, Joe Gibbs was the only coach to visit him prior to the draft. Gibbs liked what he saw and recommended that the Redskins take Williams in the first round, which they did with the 17th overall pick in the 1978 NFL Draft.
Williams spent five seasons as the starting quarterback for the Buccaneers and showed to be a very talented one for them throughout his tenure in Tampa. Then due to contract disputes, Williams left the Bucs and spent two years in the USFL before returning to the NFL with the Washington Redskins. Williams only started two games during the 1987 season but once the Redskins qualified for the playoffs they named Williams their starter. Williams won three games in the playoffs, threw for 666 yards in those games with seven touchdowns to just two interceptions.
In Super Bowl XXII, Williams defeated Denver Broncos’ quarterback John Elway 42-10. Williams threw for 340 yards with four touchdown passes and was named the Super Bowl XXII MVP. Williams was clearly a good quarterback when given the opportunity and was inducted in the Hall of Fames of both the Buccaneers and the Redskins. Now his fans can find amazing autographed collectibles that will highlight the best moments of Williams’ career. These signed pieces of memorabilia are 100% certified authentic and will only increase in value over time.
