Historical David Ortiz Milestones
David Ortiz is a retired three-time World Series Champion and a living legend in Major League Baseball. After three seasons with the Minnesota Twins, "Big Papi" joined the Boston Red Sox in 2003 and went on to establish a tremendous legacy. Within his first full season serving as Boston's designated hitter, Ortiz hit .301, with 41 home runs and 139 RBI’s. The 2004 postseason would be a memorable one for Ortiz and the Red Sox as he had a .400 batting average in the playoffs, with five home runs, and 19 RBI’s. He was named the MVP of the ALCS where he led the Red Sox back from a 0-3 deficit to defeat the New York Yankees and reach the World Series. They went on to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals and won their first World Series Championship in 86 years. The next two seasons would see Big Papi set back-to-back marks of career highs in home runs with 47 in 2005 and 54 in 2006; the latter also broke the single-season record for home runs in Red Sox history. In 2007, Ortiz further polished his sparkling reputation in Boston baseball history by leading the Red Sox to their seventh World Series Championship and second in four years. Once again, Ortiz pulled through in the postseason, as he hit .370 with three home runs and 10 RBI’s throughout the playoffs. At a point when David Ortiz was already etched in history as a Boston legend, he led the Red Sox to win the 2013 World Series Championship and kept his city's spirit alive when it was needed most. With another epic postseason performance, Ortiz sealed his third world title and earned the 2013 World Series MVP award for his efforts. Before his October 2016 retirement, Ortiz' final season as Boston's go-to designated hitter was filled with numerous honoring seasons by teammates and opponents alike, which showed how well-respected he is.
Big Papi has endeared himself to the Boston faithful as he was a major contributing factor in bringing a World Series back to Boston and breaking the curse.
