Historical Milestones
Dan Fouts went to the University of Oregon and set 19 school records during his three years as their starting quarterback. Fouts was then selected by the San Diego Chargers in the third round of in the 1973 NFL Draft. He started six games in his rookie season and became the face of the franchise for the Chargers. In 1978, Fouts had a breakout season in which he threw for 2,999 yards and 24 touchdowns.
The following year, Fouts had his first of five straight Pro Bowl seasons and led the Chargers to the playoffs. Behind the play of Fouts, the Chargers made the playoffs in four straight seasons and to the AFC title game twice in 1980 and 1981. In 1979, Fouts became the first NFL player to surpass 4,000 passing yards. He repeated that feat in the following two seasons and led the league in passing in four straight seasons from 1979 through 1982. Fouts also led the league in touchdown passes in two straight years in 1981 and 1982.
