After redshirting his freshman season and serving as a backup the next two years, he would become the team's full-time starter in his final two seasons. Over those two seasons, he posted a record of 20-5 while tossing for 4,600 yards and 30 touchdowns. In 1999, he led the Wolverines to a Citrus Bowl victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks and the next year, he would take down the Alabama Crimson Tide in overtime in the Orange Bowl.
