Historical Milestones
Chris Chelios was one of the greatest defensive players in the history of the NHL. Chelios played more games than any other defenseman in NHL history and is fifth overall with 1,651 games played. He is also tied with Gordie Howe for most seasons played in the NHL with 26 seasons.
Chelios began his career with the Montreal Canadiens and won his first Stanley Cup in the 1985-86 season. In the 1998-99 season, Chelios experienced a breakout season that saw him score 73 points and was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy for the best defenseman in the NHL. After the following season spent in Montreal, Chelios was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. Chelios would spend nine seasons in Chicago and make it back to the Stanley Cup final once, although they lost that series. He also added his second and third James Norris trophies during his time in Chicago. Chelios’ last stage of his career may have been his best when he spent ten years with the Detroit Red Wings. Chelios won two more Stanley Cups as a member of Red Wings and transitioned to a role in the organization upon his retirement.
