Historical Milestones
Known by his nicknames, “Chuck”, “Sir Charles” and the fan favorite “Round Mound of Rebound”, Charles Barkley was one of the most dominant power forwards in the NBA during his career. While listed at six foot six inches, Barkley claims to be just six foot four inches in his book, “I May Be Wrong but I Doubt It”. Yet despite his height, he played the center position at Auburn University and was dominant holding many school records such as for career field goal percentage. In 1984, Barkley won the SEC Player of the Year award and his No. 34 jersey was retired by his alma mater. He left before his final year of eligibility and was drafted with the fifth overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1984 NBA Draft.
Barkley spent eight seasons with the 76ers and averaged 23.3 points and 11.6 rebounds while being an All-Star six times. He was also named to an All-NBA team in seven of those eight seasons, four times as a member of the First-Team and three times on the Second-Team. Barkley was traded to the Phoenix Suns prior to the 1992-93 season and went on to have his best season. Barkley averaged 25.6 points on 52% shooting, averaged 12.2 rebounds and a career-high 5.1 assists. He also led the Suns to a league-best 62-20 record and was named as the league MVP. He went on to lead the Suns to the NBA Finals that year, but they lost to Michael Jordan and the Bulls.
Charles Barkley spent four seasons in Phoenix before spending his last four years in Houston with the Rockets before retiring. Overall, Barkley was an 11-time All-Star and was inducted to the Hall of Fame following his retirement. While Barkley never won an NBA Championship, he won two Gold medals in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics as a member of the “Dream Team”.
