Historical Milestones
Carlton Fisk was one of the greatest catchers to ever play in the MLB, as he holds many different record due to years playing catcher at a high level. After a couple cups of coffee in the big leagues, Fisk finally became the Red Sox starting catcher in 1972 and would go on to win the Rookie of the Year award. Fisk hit .293 with 22 home runs and 61 RBI and was the first player to ever be unanimously voted the AL Rookie of the Year. He also won his only Gold Glove award in 1972. Fisk spent nine full seasons with Boston and was an All-Star in seven of those seasons. His most memorable moment in a Red Sox uniform was when he “waved fair” his game-winning home run in extra innings of Game 6 of the 1975 World Series.
Prior to the 1981 season, Fisk signed with the White Sox and would spend 13 years behind the plate for Chicago. During his time in Chicago, Fisk was an All-Star four more times and he won three Silver Slugger awards. Playing catcher until he was 45 years old, Fisk holds an untouchable record for most season spent behind the plate with 24. At the time of his retirement he also held the record for most games behind the plate, which has since been surpassed by Ivan Rodriguez. Fisk also held the record for most home runs by a catcher with 351 before Mike Piazza hit more. Although Fisk spent more seasons with the White Sox, he chose to wear a Red Sox hat on his Hall of Fame plague when he was inducted in 2000.
Carlton Fisk was nicknamed “Pudge” and “The Commander” during his career and was one of the best leaders and catchers to ever live.
