Historical Milestones
Bobby Clarke is one of the best players in the history of the Flyers and maybe their most impactful captain as he led the Flyers to their only two Stanley Cups. Clarke was selected by the Flyers as the 17th overall pick in the 1969 NHL Entry Draft. In his third season, although Clarke took home his first bit of hardware when he overcame a tooth abscess that slowed the start to his season, he still had a good season and won the Bill Masterson Trophy for his perseverance. The next season, Clarke won his first of three Hart Memorial Trophies in 1973 for the best player in the NHL.
Starting in the 1974 season Bobby Clark led the Flyers to the first of two straight Stanley Cup victories. These are the only two Stanley Cups that the Flyers have won in franchise history. Clarke holds many franchise records for the Flyers and they have named their own trophy after him, called the Bobby Clarke trophy which is now awarded to the Flyers' best player each season. Clarke spent his entire 15-year career with the Flyers and they also retired his No. 16 jersey. In 1987, Bobby Clarke was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
