Historical Milestones
Andre Dawson was one of the best five-tool players to ever play in the MLB as he truly combined all aspects that make a great baseball player. Dawson began his career with the Montreal Expos and won the 1977 Rookie of the Year award in his first full season starting in the outfield for the Expos. That year, Dawson hit 19 home runs with 65 RBI and 21 stolen bases. His ability to hit for power and steal bases is what set Dawson apart, as he hit 20 plus home runs in seven of his seasons in Montreal and stole 20 plus bases in the same number of seasons.
After spending the first 11 seasons of his career with the Expos, Dawson signed as a free agent with the Chicago Cubs prior to the 1987 season. During his career in Montreal, Dawson was an All-Star three times, won three Silver Sluggers and six consecutive Gold Glove awards from 1980 through 1985. In Dawson’s first season in Chicago, he had the best year of his career hitting a career-high 49 home runs, with a career-high 137 RBI and won his first and only MVP. Dawson won two more Gold Glove awards and one more Silver Slugger during his time with Chicago and was an All-Star in his first five seasons there.
Andre Dawson spent six great years playing as a member of the Cubs, before leaving in free agency prior to the 1993 season. Dawson would spend two years with the Boston Red Sox and two more with the Florida Marlins before deciding to retire. Known as “The Hawk” and “Awesome Dawson” in his career, Dawson ended up being elected to the Hall of Fame in 2010.
