The Washington Bullets is now known as the Washington Wizards. The franchise’s former name was used from 1974 until 1977. It started out in Baltimore, Maryland in 1963. Its present owner is Ted Leonsis while the team’s GM is Ernie Grunfeld. Acting as Head Coach for the Wizards is Flip Saunders.
The Washington Bullets unfortunately has only one NBA championship in its entire franchise history, and this was in 1978 when they beat the Seattle Supersonics in a do-or-die battle for the championship in Game 7.
In 1995, then-owner Abe Pollin shared with the press his intention to change the franchise’s name and replace the word “bullet” because of its violent connotation, which he had been uncomfortable with. Names that were considered, before “Wizards” was chosen, included Sea Dogs and Dragons.
