Historical Vegas Golden Knights Milestones
In 2016, the Vegas Golden Knights became the first professional sports franchise to be based in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were also the first NHL expansion team since 2000. In 2014, Bill Foley was selected by the NHL to lead the ownership group on the newest expansion team for the league. On June 22, 2016, at the league owners' meeting in Las Vegas coincidentally, the Vegas expansion bid was approved by a unanimous vote. Almost immediately, Foley began hiring his front office personnel, starting with former Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee. And on April 13th, 2017, the Golden Knights hired Gerard Gallant as their first head coach. With their inaugural season set for the 2017-2018 season, the Golden Knights began to establish their farm system as well as prepare for the expansion draft. The draft featured some impressive names being selected by the Golden Knights, such as goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and forward James Neal. Shortly after they participated in their first NHL Entry Draft and selected Cody Glass with the teams first ever draft pick.
With the Golden Knights set to begin to play in their inaugural season on October 6th, 2017, they headed down to Dallas to take on the Stars in their first game in franchise history. James Neal would score the first goal in Vegas Golden Knights history and lead the team to their first win. Vegas would also win their first home game which was played on October 10th, 2017, in which they defeated the Arizona Coyotes. Vegas set their first of what would be many records by an expansion team by increasing their unbeaten streak and beginning the season 3-0. Next on the list of accomplishments was becoming the first NHL team in their inaugural season to begin the season winning eight of their first nine games. And later on in December would set the record for most consecutive wins by an expansion team with an eight-game winning streak. After only 50 games, the Golden Knights had already surpassed the record for most wins by an expansion team with 34 and would finish the season with 51 wins. Later in that month of February, they would set the record for most points by an expansion team with 84 and would reach 109 total points by the end of the season. Vegas' incredible season continued by becoming the first team since the Edmonton Oilers and Hartford Whalers in the 1979-80 season to reach the playoffs in their inaugural season. And on March 31st, the Golden Knights became the first true expansion team in the four major North American sports league's to win their division in their inaugural season. The 2018 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs began for the Golden Knights with them facing their divisional rival, the Los Angeles Kings. They would win Game 1 by the score of 1-0 with Shea Theodore scoring the first playoff goal in franchise history. Vegas would go on to sweep the Kings and become the first expansion team to sweep their first playoff series in their first season. VGK would then defeat another Pacific division rival, the San Jose Sharks, to move on to the Western Conference Finals and face the Winnipeg Jets. In the Western Conference Finals, the Golden Knights would dispose of the Jets in five games and become the first team since the 1967-68 St. Louis Blues to reach the Stanley Cup Finals in their inaugural season.
