The Toronto Blue Jays are the sole Canadian baseball franchise in Major League Baseball. The Blue Jays play in the American League’s Eastern Division and have done so since their first season in 1977. They play their home games in the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada which was the first stadium to ever have a fully retractable roof. During their history the organization has won two World Series titles in the early-1990s.
In the beginning days of the franchise they finished at the bottom of the division each of the first five years of their existence. The Blue Jays had their first winning season in 1983 and in 1985 behind sluggers George Bell and Jesse Barfield they had a franchise high 99 wins but lost to the Kansas City Royals in seven games in the ALCS. In 1987 Bell won the AL MVP Award smashing 47 home runs, driving in 134 baserunners, and posting a .308 batting average. They returned to the ALCS once again in 1989 and 1991 losing both times in five games to the Oakland Athletics and Minnesota Twins respectively. Their greatest success as a franchise came in 1992 and 1993 they won back-to-back World Series titles over the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies respectively. Pat Borders was the MVP of the ’92 World Series batting .450 and Paul Molitor was the MVP the following year batting .500 with two home runs and eight RBIs. In Game 6 of the 1993 World Series Joe Carter hit a walk-off home run to end the series sending the stadium into a frenzy and creating one of the most iconic moments in baseball history. After their back-to-back titles the team did not return to the playoffs again until 2015 when they won their most recent AL East Division title. They were powered that season by All-Stars Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, and the 2015 AL MVP Award winner Josh Donaldson. In 2016 they lost in the ALCS against the Cleveland Indians, which was their most recent trip to the postseason. John Gibbons is in his second stint as the club’s manager and is looking to lead the franchise back to its days when they were at the top of the conference.
