In 1972 the Texas Rangers played their first season as a Major League Baseball franchise. The franchise originally played in Washington as the Senators from 1961-1971. The team is a member of the American League and play in the West Division. Ove the course of their history the team has won seven division titles and won two American League Championships.
During the 1970s and 1980s the team failed to qualify for the playoffs but did have Hall of Fame pitchers play for the organization including Fergie Jenkins and Nolan Ryan. From 1989-1994 future President of the United States George W. Bush was one of the team’s owners. In the mid-1990s the Ranges began an incredibly successful run that saw them win their first division title in 1996 followed by more division titles in 1998 and 1999. During that time period their roster included sluggers Rafael Palmeiro, Juan Gonzalez, and Ivan Rodriguez. Gonzalez won American League MVP Awards in 1996 and 1998 and Rodriguez won an MVP Award in 1999. In each playoff appearance after winning their division title they were eliminated by the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series round. Alex Rodriguez was signed by the team in 2001 to a 10 year/252 million-dollar contract which was the biggest deal in baseball history at the time. Rodriguez played for the team from 2001-2003 before being traded to the Yankees. During his three seasons with the Rangers “A-Rod” hit 156 home runs, had 395 RBIs, and 569 hits, even winning an AL MVP Award in 2003. The Rangers had their most successful run under Manager Ron Washington when he led them to division titles in 2010 and 2011, as well as winning the only AL Pennants in franchise history in those seasons. During that time they once again boasted an impressive roster of sluggers that included Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz, and Michael Young. They lost to the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals, respectively in their World Series appearances and have not been back since. They have won two more division titles in 2015 and 2016 under Manager Jeff Banister, bowing out both times in the ALDS. The team is rebuilding now with a roster of stars that contains Joey Gallo, Jurickson Profar, and Rougned Odor.
