The San Jose Earthquakes are a professional soccer club that plays in the Western Conference of the MLS. Originally named the Clash, San Jose was one of the ten charter clubs of the MLS that began play in 1996. In fact, they played the first match in MLS history in a 1-0 victory against the D.C. United. The Earthquakes plays their home matches in Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California.
The Earthquakes have won two MLS Cups in their history in 2001 and 2003. They have also won two Supporters’ Shields in 2005 and 2012 for having the best regular season amongst any team in the MLS. The team’s chief rivals are with the fellow charter team the L.A. Galaxy and whenever they play it has been dubbed the California Clasico. The Earthquakes did have a two-year hiatus when their owner decided to move the team to Houston for a new stadium. Houston became the Dynamo; an expansion franchise and the Earthquakes did not play from 2006-08.
Over the course of their history, the Earthquakes have had plenty of great players that have played for them in San Jose. Goaltenders Joe Cannon and Pat Onstad were both excellent for the Earthquakes winning Goaltender of the Year Awards and Chris Wondolowski turned in the best individual season in franchise history back in 2012, leading the league in scoring. He won both the MLS Golden Boot and MLS MVP Award that season.
