The San Francisco 49ers are an NFL team based out of San Francisco, California that plays in the NFC West Division. In 1946, the 49ers became the first professional sports franchise to call the Bay Area of California home. The team originated in the All-America Football Conference in 1946 before they moved to the National Football League in 1950. The 49ers nickname pays tribute to the history of Northern California, a major hot spot for the famous Gold Rush of 1849.
Unfortunately, it took San Francisco nearly two decades to reach any relevancy in the professional football world. In 1981, the 49ers finally made their mark on NFL history when the team took home the first of what would be five Super Bowl victories in the 1980’s and 1990’s. With Hall of Fame quarterback, Joe Montana, controlling the offense and the legendary Ronnie Lott patrolling the defensive backfield, the 49ers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 in Super Bowl XVI. From that point on, there would be no looking back for the San Francisco 49ers franchise. Joe Montana went on to lead the team to Super Bowl XIX, XXII, and XXIV victories, where he was named the game’s MVP in two of those three championship games. At the turn of the decade, the quarterback reigns of the team were turned over from the two-time NFL MVP, Montana, to up and coming superstar, Steve Young. San Francisco didn’t skip a beat after the offensive change. With the best receiver in the NFL, Jerry Rice, as his number one target, Steve Young was able to bring the 49ers back to the Super Bowl for the 1994 season, where San Francisco went on to defeat the San Diego Chargers 49-26. Young capped off his illustrious career with seven Pro Bowl appearances and two NFL MVP Awards to his name. After a few shaky years in the 2000’s, San Francisco once again found a star quarterback they could count on for the future. In 2011, the Niners selected quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, in the second round of the NFL Draft. Kaepernick proved to be one of the NFL’s latest quarterback sensations with his unparalleled ability to march down the field both in the air and on the ground. With the dual-threat quarterback at the helm, San Francisco had once again become one of the most feared teams in the NFL, winning the NFC Championship in 2012 but ultimately falling short to the Ravens in the Super Bowl. Now they have Jimmy Garoppolo running the offense and is determined to return the Niners back to glory and to take bring home their sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy in the near future.
