Historical Milestones
The Ottawa Senators play in the NHL’s Eastern Conference, in the Atlantic Division with their home games played at the Canadian Tire Centre. A previous incarnation of the Ottawa Senators existed until 1934, but the franchise was resurrected as an expansion team in 1992. The Ottawa Senators won their very first game when the team was brought back in 1992-1993, beating the Montreal Canadiens 5-3 with Neil Brady scoring the Senator’s first goal. The team would struggle in their first few years but developed stars in the making like Alexei Yashin and Daniel Alfredsson, who won the 1995-1996 Calder Trophy. Ottawa would make their first playoff appearance in 1996-1997, taking the Buffalo Sabres to seven games before faltering. 1998-1999 would be a year of firsts, as Ottawa posted their first season of over 100 points and their first Northeast Division title.
In 2001-2002, the Ottawa Senators had five players, including Daniel Alfredsson and Marian Hossa all score over 50 points, leading the team to a sixth straight playoff appearance. Ottawa would win the 2002-2003 President’s Trophy with 52 wins and reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time ever. The Ottawa Senators would trade for star goalie Dominik Hasek in 2004, and then add Atlanta’s Dany Heatley next year. They won the 2005-2006 season opener 3-2 as Heatley and Daniel Alfredsson beat Ed Belfour of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL’s first ever shootout. 2006-2007 Ottawa would make the franchise’s first trip to the Stanley Cup Finals after knocking off the Buffalo Sabres in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals behind Daniel Alfredsson’s overtime goal. The Senators would not get to claim the cup as they lost to the Anaheim Ducks in five games. The Ottawa Senators would reach the playoffs for 12 straight years, ending in the 2007-2008 postseason. In 2009-2010, they would set a franchise record with an 11-game winning streak in the regular season. Individual accolades would pile up as Erik Karlsson won the 2011-2012 Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defender and Paul McLean won the Jack Adams Award as Coach of the Year the following year. In 2014-2015, Daniel Alfredsson would rejoin the team on a one-day contract so that he could retire as a Senator after 17 stellar years there. With Andrew “Hamburglar” Hammond in goal, Ottawa that year became the first team to overcome a 14-point deficit in the standings to make the playoffs. Erik Karlsson would also win his second Norris Trophy while Mike Hoffman led the team, and all NHL rookies, with 27 goals. The 2016-2017 season saw the franchise retire Alfredsson’s jersey en route to another playoff berth. Ottawa would reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in a decade and took the Pittsburgh Penguins to seven games before losing in a double-overtime Game 7.
