The Miami Marlins are an MLB team that plays in the National League East Division. They used to be referred to as the Florida Marlins but changed their name to represent Miami when they opened their new ballpark in downtown Miami in 2012. The Florida Marlins were an expansion franchise that played its first season in 1993.
The Marlins are a unique team in that they have won the World Series in both of the two seasons for which they qualified for the playoffs. The Marlins have never won their division as they entered as a Wild Card team in both 1997 and 2003, to go on to win the World Series. Their first team to win the World Series was managed by Jim Leyland and consisted of star young players like Gary Sheffield and Livan Hernandez. In 2003, the Marlins had a roster mixed with veterans like Pudge Rodriguez, Jeff Conine and Mike Lowell, with young up and coming stars such as Miguel Cabrera who was a rookie at the time. That 2003 team also featured a dynamic young rotation of Josh Beckett, Brad Penny, Dontrelle Willis and Carl Pavano. The Marlins have produced some of the best talented players in recent memory such as Hanley Ramirez, Cabrera, Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna.
Marlins fans are now excited to see what the ownership group, headed by Derek Jeter, can do for the future of their franchise.
