The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. With an estimated value of 3.3 billion dollars in 2018 the Lakers are also one of the most valuable franchises as well as the most decorated with 16 championships in their history. They were not always located in L.A., playing in Minneapolis from 1947-1960. This organization has had some of the most iconic players of all-time wear their world-famous gold and purple uniforms and also has one of the largest fan bases in all of sports.
Before moving to Los Angeles the Lakers already had a dynasty while playing in Minneapolis. Center George Mikan led the franchise to five titles between the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball Association in 1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, and 1954. Mikan was a four-time NBA All-Star and three-time scoring champion during his Hall of Fame career. Throughout the 1960s the franchise won many Western Conference titles but fell short of winning any NBA titles until the 1971-1972 NBA season. In 1972 the Lakers defeated the New York Knicks in the finals with thirteen-time All-Star and Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlin winning the Finals MVP Award. Throughout the 1980s the team emerged as one of the most dominant dynasty’s that sports have ever seen, winning NBA Championships in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988. It is no surprise that they found success during that time with a roster stacked full of future Hall of Famers that included Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Byron Scott with Head Coach Pat Riley leading the way. During the early-1990s the Lakers struggled but rebounded in a big way during the 1996 offseason by selecting Kobe Bryant in the first round of the NBA Draft and signing Shaquille O’Neal. While playing together Shaq and Bryant won three consecutive NBA titles in 2000, 2001, and 2002. After Shaq was traded away to the Miami Heat in 2004 the organization was rebuilding for the next several years but returned to their winning ways in 2009 and 2010, winning two more NBA Championships. This organization is on the rise once again with young superstars on the roster like Lonzo Ball and Kyle Kuzma and they look as if they will be competing for more NBA titles in the near future.
