During the early years of the Indiana Pacers they competed in the American Basketball Association. This franchise was founded in 1967 and played in the ABA until it merged with the NBA in 1976. The Pacers currently compete in the Eastern Conference’s Central Division and have won six NBA divisional titles during in their history. A high point came in the franchise’s history when they won their only Eastern Conference Title following the 1999-2000 NBA regular season.
While playing in the ABA the Pacers were the league’s most successful franchise. With a roster that included Hall of Fame players such as Mel Daniels and George McGinnis they made five ABA Finals, winning three in the league’s nine year history. Along with the Denver Nuggets, New York Nets, and the San Antonio Spurs the Pacers joined the NBA when the ABA merged with it in 1976. During the late-1970s and the early-1980s the team had difficulty finding success on the court but at the 1987 NBA Draft they selected Reggie Miller out of UCLA with the eleventh overall pick. Miller would play for the franchise until he retired in 2005 and at the time of his retirement he was the NBA’s all-time leader in three pointers made. After Larry Brown took over in 1994 he led them to their first divisional title in his first year as their head coach but he stepped down in 1997. The iconic Larry Bird coached the team from 1997-2000 leading them to their only Eastern Conference title in 2000. In the 2000 NBA Finals the Pacers fell short to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. Throughout the 2000s the team remained competitive with players such as Ron Artest, Jermaine O’Neal, and Danny Granger on the roster. During the 2017 offseason they traded their All-Star forward Paul George to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Victor Oladipo. With the arrival of Oladipo it has signaled a new era in Pacers’ basketball and they have an incredibly promising future ahead of them.
