Also known as the New England Whalers when they were still members of the World Hockey Association from the seasons of 1972 to 1979. The Hartford Whalers were North American professional ice hockey team that is based in Hartford Connecticut, US. The club also played from 1979 to 1997 in the National Hockey League. The team was then moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1997 and was then named as the Carolina Hurricanes. Sometime in November 1971, the Hartford Whalers franchise was founded. It is when the World Hockey Association awarded the Franchise to the New England businessmen whose names are Godfrey Wood, John Coburn, Howard Baldwin and William Edwin Barnes. The team began to play in Boston. They started to play their home games at the Boston Arena and also in the Boston Garden. On January 11, 1975, they were able to play their first game that is in front of a sellout crowd and that was in Hartford Civic Center Coliseum.
