The Florida Panthers franchise first took the ice during the 1993-94 NHL season. That makes the organization one of the youngest franchises in the NHL. The Panthers play in the Atlantic Division of Eastern Conference, winning a conference title in 1996. Originally they played in Miami but moved to Sunrise, Florida to play in their current home the BB&T Center.
The franchise was led by Scott Mellanby, John Vanbiesbrouck, and Ray Sheppard during the early years of the franchise. In the beginning days of this franchise goal celebrations were marked by Panthers fans throwing toy rats on the ice after a goal was scored. The 1995-1996 season was the most successful season in franchise history, which saw them making it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, winning the Eastern Conference Championship. The Panthers lost to the Colorado Avalanche in four games and have not won a playoff series since. After moving to a new arena in 1998 the franchise traded for future Hall of Famer Pavel Bure, who played for the franchise for the next three and a half seasons. The organization has a stockpiled talent such as Roberto Luongo, Nick Bjugstad, Vincent Trocheck, and Jonathan Huberdeau making them a force to be reckoned with on the ice. The Panthers have won division titles recently signifying that the glory days of old are not far away from returning.
