The Florida Gators is the official athletics program for the University of Florida, located in Gainesville. One of the few schools in the national known for their dominance in both football and basketball, UF football first kicked off in 1906 and the basketball team in 1915. Gainesville is home to two of the rowdiest sports environments in the NCAA, with Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, AKA “The Swamp”, for football and the O’Connell Center for basketball.
The Gators football team has been incredibly successful throughout their time playing in the famed SEC conference. With three national championships, eight conference titles, and 31 All-Americans, Florida football is one of the most storied programs in the nation. A number of football’s most famous names have at one time worn the orange and blue of UF. NFL all-time rushing leader Emmitt Smith, long-time football great Fred Taylor, and Heisman Trophy Winner Tim Tebow have all called the Swamp home.
University of Florida basketball has been one of the hottest programs in the country within the last decade. Under the leadership of head coach Billy Donovan, the Gators took home back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007. Since 1994 the team has made the Final Four five times, including their most recent appearance in the 2014 tournament. Some of the NBA’s biggest names got their start at the University of Florida, like Bradley Beal, Joakim Noah, and Chandler Parsons.
