The Detroit Tigers are an MLB team that plays in the American League Central division. They began as one of the first eight charter franchises in the AL back in 1901.
The Tigers have won 11 pennants in their history, starting with three in a row from 1907-1909. Ty Cobb was the leader of those teams and was the greatest Tiger player of all-time. Cobb set 90 MLB records while he was playing and was baseballs hit king for a long time with his 4,191 before Pete Rose eventually broke his record. In fact, Cobb led the league in batting a whopping 12 times during his career and was known for his fiery play. Still, they lost their first three World Series appearances and then lost again in 1934. The 1935 Tigers featured future Hall of Famers Mickey Cochrane, Charlie Gehringer, Goose Goslin and Hank Greenberg and would go on to beat the Cubs in the World Series in six games. Hank Greenberg would win another World Series ten years later with fellow Hall of Famer Hal Newhouser in 1945. In 1968 a new core of Tigers that included Hall of Famers Al Kaline and Eddie Matthews won the third World Series in franchise history. The Tigers fourth World Series win came in 1984. The Detroit Tigers last great team to win an AL Pennant came in 2012 under legendary manager Jim Leyland. With a star-studded starting rotation of ace Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez, Rick Porcello and Doug Fister along with the powerful combination of sluggers Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder, the Tigers cruised to the World Series but ultimately got swept by the San Francisco Giants.
