The Detroit Pistons have one of the most storied histories in all of the NBA. This organization started off located in Fort Wayne, Indiana and played there until relocating to Detroit in 1957. The Pistons became members of the NBA after the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America merged in 1949 and over the course of their time in the league they have managed to win three NBA titles.
In the early years of the Detroit Pistons franchise they were led by stars such as Dave DeBusschere and Bob Lanier. Both of these players would go on to have Hall of Fame careers, but the organization struggled to find success on the court not winning a divisional title until 1988. During the 1980s the Pistons earned the nickname “The Bad Boys” with a roster that boasted players including Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, Joe Dumars, and John Salley. “The Bad Boys” were known for their physical play on the court and would strike fear into their opponents because they knew that they would be in for a long night every time they faced them. At their peak “The Bad Boys” won three consecutive Eastern Conference Titles and back-to-back NBA Titles in 1989 and 1990. At the 1994 NBA Draft the Pistons selected Grant Hill with the third overall pick and he was the face of the franchise until he left after the 1999-2000 season to join the Orlando Magic. During the mid-2000s the organization returned to its winning ways with a starting lineup of players made up of Chauncey Billups, Tayshaun Prince, Ben Wallace, Richard Hamilton, and Rasheed Wallace. The Pistons appeared in six straight Eastern Conference Finals from 2003-2008, winning Eastern Conference title in 2004 and 2005 as well as a NBA Championship in 2005. After their run in the mid-2000s the franchise fell off from its winning ways but are in the process of turning that around. With “big men” like Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond leading the way it will not be long before the Pistons are competing for another NBA Championship.
