The Columbus Crew Soccer Club began to play as one of the ten charter clubs for the MLS back in 1996. Originally just known as the Columbus Crew until the SC was added to the team name in 2014, they have played their home games at Mapfre Stadium in Columbus, Ohio since 1999.
Also known by the nickname the Black and Gold, the Columbus Crew has had their most success in the regular season as evidenced by winning the Supporters’ Shield three times for having the best regular season record of any team in the MLS. The Crew also won the 2002 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and in 2008 they won their first elusive MLS Cup. One of the biggest reasons that Columbus won that MLS Cup was due to the stellar play of Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Schelotto won an MLS MVP with the Crew and helped guide them to the 2008 MLS Cup and two of their three Supporters’ Shields in 2008 and 2009. Brian McBride and Jeff Cunningham are a few other excellent players that have worn the Black and Gold and now the Crew feature star players like Federico Higuain and Gyasi Zardes.
