The Baltimore Orioles are a Major League baseball team that plays in the American League East division. The Orioles franchise first came into the league as the Milwaukee Brewers in 1901, but after just one year, moved to St. Louis where they were called the Browns. After 52 years as the Browns, they moved on last time to Baltimore, Maryland and became the Orioles, for which they are still known as today.
Only one of the team’s seven pennants came before they made their move to Baltimore, and all three of their World Series titles came after. The best years of the Orioles franchise started when they made a trade for future Hall of Famer Frank Robinson before the 1966 season. With the slugging outfielder leading the way, the Orioles would win their first World Series in the following season. This spanned the best era of Oriole baseball as the team had players like Frank Robinson as well as Brooks Robinson and pitcher Jim Palmer leading the way to a lot of winning. Between 1966 and 1983, Baltimore won six pennants, and seven AL East division titles. They also added World Series victories in 1979 and 1983. Another great player for the Orioles was Cal Ripken Jr. who was on the 1983 World Series team. Ripken was most remembered for being baseball’s iron man, playing in an MLB record 2,632 consecutive games. While Ripken had an amazing Hall of Fame career, he only got the chance to play in the playoffs three times in 1983, 1996 and 1997. One of Ripken’s teammates at the beginning of his career was fellow Hall of Famer Eddie Murray. Known by the nickname “Steady Eddie”, Murray is one of the rare players to eclipse 500 home runs and 3,000 hits with 504 homers and 3,255 hits.
