Historical Ryne Sandberg Milestones
Ryne Sandberg was one of the best all-around players of his generation. Sandberg was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1978 in the 20th round of the MLB Draft and made his Major League debut in 1981. Following his first season he was traded to the Chicago Cubs and remained there until retiring in 1997. Sandberg has also served as a manager in the major leagues, managing the Phillies from 2013-2015.
During Ryne Sandberg’s MLB career he was a ten-time All-Star and a nine-time Gold Glove Award winner. Sandberg also won the 1984 National League MVP Award and seven Silver Slugger Awards. Because of these achievements, “Ryno” is considered one of the best players of his era because of his abilities both at the plate and at second base. After retiring from Major League Baseball, Sandberg had his No. 23 retired by the Cubs and was elected to the Hall of Fame in the same year, 2005.
