Historical Milestones
Ricky Williams is one of the most talented and unstoppable forces the game of football has ever seen. First becoming a breakout star at the University of Texas, Williams holds and shares countless NCAA and school records for his four-year career as a Longhorn. In Williams senior season, he rushed for nine touchdowns and 385 yards in just the first two games of the season. Williams rushed for 2,327 yards and 29 touchdowns in 1998 on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy, the Walter Camp Award, the Maxwell Award, and the Doax Walker Award amongst other accolades.
Upon entering the 1999 NFL Draft, Williams was highly regarded and Saints Head Coach Mike Ditka, traded every pick he had that year to select Williams as the fifth pick in the draft. Williams spent four moderately successful years in New Orleans before being traded to the Miami Dolphins prior to the 2002 NFL season. During his first year in Miami, Williams had a career year. He led the league in rushing yards with 1,853 yards and had 16 touchdowns. The next year the running back was once again very productive as the focal point of the Dolphins offensive attack. William spent three years in the middle of his prime in and out of the league between 2004 and 2006, missing two full seasons, due to marijuana suspensions and self-proclaimed early retirement. Williams returned for the 2007 season but tore his pectoral muscle in his first game, ending his season early. Finally, Williams had a bounce-back season in 2008 splitting time with incumbent starter Ronnie Brown. In 2009, due to Brown sustaining a season-ending injury, Williams started the last seven games and became the seventh player, 32 years or older, to rush over 1,000 yards in a season. Williams spent one more season as the backup in Miami and one season in Baltimore with Ravens before retiring following the 2011 season.
