Historical Milestones
After a standout career at UNLV, Randall Cunningham was drafted in the second round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Cunningham became the Eagles starting quarterback during the 1987 season and became a Pro-Bowler in 1988. That season, Cunningham was elected as the starter for the NFC in the Pro Bowl, which was the first time a black quarterback had earned that distinction and received MVP of the game. Not only was Cunningham a talented quarterback, but he was also a good punter during his time in college. In the 1989 season, Cunningham was asked to punt, and he unleashed an Eagles team record 91-yard punt.
Cunningham spent 11 years in Philadelphia and had his best season in 1990. That year he threw for 3,446 yards, had 30 touchdowns, and rushed for a career-high 942 yard with 5 touchdowns. Cunningham was awarded the PFWA MVP award, the NFC Offensive Player of the Year Award, and one of his three Bert Bell Awards. Cunningham missed the 1991 season due to injury but bounced back enough the next year to win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. Cunningham left the Eagles following the 1995 season and was out of football until getting a call to come to play for the Vikings midseason in 1997. In 1998, Cunningham spent his only full season starting for a team outside of the Eagles and had an unbelievable year for the Vikings. He won the NEA MVP and led the league in passer rating all at the age of 35. Cunningham threw for 3,704 yards and had a career-high of 34 touchdowns, leading Minnesota to a 15-1 record. At the time of his retirement, Cunningham held the NFL record for the most rushing yards and average rushing yards per game for a quarterback, both have since been broken.
