Yu Darvish is one of the more dynamic and talented starting pitchers that we have ever seen come out of Japan to pitch in the MLB. After spending the beginning of his career in Japan playing in the NPB, he was posted for international bidding and was signed by the Texas Rangers prior to the 2012 season. Yu Darvish made an immediate impact in his first season in the MLB, winning 16 games and striking out 221 batters in his 29 starts. While he was an All-Star in 2012, his true breakout season came in 2013 when he cut his ERA from 3.90 (2012) down to 2.83 and struck out an incredible 277 hitters. His performance had him finish second in the Cy Young Award voting and he was once again an All-Star.
In 2014, Darvish was once again an All-Star but injuries began to take their toll and he made just 22 starts. Then in Spring Training in 2015, it was discovered that Darvish would need Tommy John surgery and he would miss all of that season and half of the 2016 season. In 2017, Darvish was finally at full strength again and showed that he could still perform at a high level as he once again struck out over 200 batters and was named to his fourth All-Star game. At the trade deadline that year, Darvish was sent to Los Angeles Dodgers and he became a big part of their starting rotation on a team that ultimately went to Game 7 of the World Series.
After playing in the World Series with the Dodgers, Darvish was a free agent prior to the 2018 season and he chose to sign a six-year contract with the Chicago Cubs.
