Guillermo Hernandez Villanueva, born on November 14, 1954 is a retired Major Baseball League player who is famously known as Willie Hernandez. He entered the major league with the Chicago cubs which he joined in 1977. He made his first MLB appearance on April 9, 1977 for the Cubs. According to reviews, he finished his first two years as a rookie with a 3.77 earned run average. However, reviews say he wasn’t able to maintain his good start as he struggled in the next few years of his career.
His career was again sparked after he joined the Philadelphia Phillies with which he made 8-4 record and recorded an earned run average of 3.29 with seven saves made. His team made it to the World Series while he was part of it but unfortunately lost to Baltimore Orioles.
He joined the Detroit Tigers in 1984 and finally made career high records with 9 wins, 140 innings pitched, an amazing 1.92 ERA and 112 strikeouts.
His skills were duly recognized as he received a number of awards including the Cy Young Award in the American League in 1984 and the 1984 AL TSN Pitcher of the Year award. He is also a three-time All-Star selection and was named as the 1984 American League Most Valuable Player.
