Tom Seaver is the best pitcher in the history of the New York Mets and one of the greatest in the history of the MLB. Nicknamed “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise” Seaver had an unbelievable first 11 years of his career as the ace of the New York Mets. His achievements during that time began with winning the 1967 Rookie of the Year after winning 16 games, pitching 18 complete games and making his first of 12 All-Star appearances with an ERA on the season of 2.76. In 1969 Tom Terrific was simply that, going 25-7 with a 2.21 ERA in route to his first of three Cy Young Awards. Seaver led the Mets to their first World Series title that season. After losing the first game of the World Series, Seaver pitched in Game 4 and threw a 10-inning complete game allowing just one run and getting the win for the Mets, they would finish the series in Game 5.
After spending the first 11 years of his career with the Mets, Seaver was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in what has been dubbed by New York sports reporters as the “Midnight Massacre” as the Mets dealt there two best players one night in Tom Seaver and Dave Kingman. Seaver would return to the Mets for one more season in 1983 and overall had a 198-124 record in a Mets uniform with a 2.57 ERA. He also won three Cy Youngs, led the National League in strikeouts five times and in both wins and ERA three times. In 1992, Tom Seaver became the first player to go into the Hall of Fame as a member of the New York Mets.
Tom Seaver is one of the best pitchers we have ever seen grace the mound and probably the greatest Mets to ever live.
